Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her mother the space she required during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art, and theater. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via artwork. Although DuVernay lived living in Compton with her family she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma, and later directed a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood California. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of a young student. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury as well as look through their trash. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a young publicist for a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
